Standardized sand placed in the reservoir is released and guided by the tube onto the test specimen, positioned at a 45° angle and at a distance of 25mm (0.98") from the lower aperture of the tube.

The volume of sand required to obtain total erosion of the coating of a known thickness in an area of approximately 4mm (0.16") diameter indicates the abrasion resistance.
