The Elcometer 550 Mark IV Non-Contact Uncured Powder Gauge utilizes the latest technologies for airborne ultrasonics, to measure the cured thickness of uncured powder coatings over most any substrate. Applications include smooth or flat metallic surfaces using steel or aluminum sub base, curved surfaces as well as flat rigid materials such as MDF.
This new design incorporates new color graphic LCD display which highlights all aspects of measurement process; signal strength, distance from the object, energy level, bound limits, number of samples and final thickness. Parameters internal to the unit allow for manual adjustment of calibration data and compensation for material shrinkage due to the curing process.
The Elcometer 550 has selectable measurement units (metric/USCS) and a resolution of 1micron (.04 mils) and measured material thickness can vary between 30 microns (1.18 mils) and 110 microns (4.4 mils). Calibrated accuracy is +/- 5 microns (+/- .25 mils) or 5% of the coating thickness whichever is greater. The unit is capable of storing 200 measurements in non-volatile memory. Enhanced electronics allow for faster calculations of the sample data and improved accuracy.

Please use the calculator utility above to help you compute the "pay-back period" of the Elcometer 550 for your organization.
Keeping most of the variables the same, and just changing the total area and the film build numbers, the calculator puts the comparison into perspective for your specific application.
For example; to coat 10,000 sq/ft of surface area per month, and over-applying 4 mils instead of 2 mils, at a price of $1/lb, it will take approx. 5 years for the Elcometer 550 to pay for itself. As the surface areas being coated increases, and the price of powder goes higher, the "pay-back period" becomes shorter very quickly.
